We welcomed exchange students from Napier Girls’ High School in New Zealand. In Chu-2 MATH class, we tried to learn Math in English by using playing cards.

The topic that day was “What are Inverse Operations?” Inverse means the opposite. In math, an inverse operation can be defined as the operation that undoes what was done by the previous operation. The set of two opposite operations is called inverse operations.

The class was brimming with talk and laughter. We had a wonderful time with the Napier Girls’ High School students and also, it was a good opportunity to try math class in English.

ニュージーランド（NZ）のネイピア・ガールズ・ハイスクールNapier Girls’ High School （本校姉妹校）の生徒14名と教員2名が来校し、本校で一日過ごしました。中２数学の授業では、トランプを使って英語で算数を学びました！その日のテーマは「Inverse Operationsとは何か？」でした。「Inverse」とは逆つまり反対のことです。数学において、前の計算で行われた計算を元に戻す計算と定義できます。つまり、２つの反対の計算の組み合わせることで逆算することになります。授業はとても盛り上がり笑い声で溢れ、Napier Girls’ のみなさんと楽しい時間を過ごすことができました。私自身は数学科教員ですので英語での授業は難しくうまく授業展開ができない場面もありましたが、自分自身にとっても課題が見つかりとても良い勉強になりました。またこうした授業が子供たちにとって、更なる英語学習の動機付けにつながることを期待しています。
